While some pumpkin patches produce small but serviceable gourds, others seem to yield almost supernaturally perfect orange pumpkins—ideally suited for carving into Jack O’Lanterns. These extraordinary patches are said to be tended by the Caretaker: a hooded ghoul with a glowing skeletal face who watches over those fields marked as “special” by Lantern Jack himself. The Caretaker toils each night beneath the bright summer moon, ensuring that every pumpkin under his care is imbued with the necessary magic to become an impeccable Jack O’Lantern for Halloween night."
