It is said that at certain All Hallows gatherings, an unfamiliar figure slips in among the revelers. Small and stooped, draped in a crinkled orange suit, its wide skull grin and candlelit eyes mark it as no mortal. This is the Phantom Guest, a trickster spirit sent forth by Lantern Jack to test the merriment of the living.
It lingers in corners, giggling and mumbling to itself cryptically. Now and then it approaches a random guest and whispers a strange riddle. Those who answer with wit or courage are said to be blessed with good fortune until next All Hallows. Those who falter or turn away often find their lanterns smashed, or hear scratching at their door before dawn. To welcome it is to be favored with Halloween’s true spirit. To spurn it is to invite bad fortune.
